GE Super Radio III, AKA, The RCA Super Port No Longer Sold in USA?

RCA RP7887 AM/FM Super Port Radio
Tom Welch has informed me that the formerly known GE Superradio III, now the RCA Super Port, will no longer be sold in the US. You can still buy it for $50 at The Great Hardware Store.  I wouldn't fret too much, since Sangean is working on a Super AM Radio, which should be on the market soon.

This morning on Amazon.Com, there are a few Super Radios III left at $142, ouch! Universal Radio and Grove Enterprises has this radio as discontinued. For years, the Super radio sold in the $40 to $50 dollar range. The Sangean PRD5 is probably a better value and alternative at $71, or better yet, wait a few months for Sangean to release a new portable radio. The folks at FM Atlas also have a few highly modified Super Radios in stock, click http://members.aol.com/fmatlas/home.html to view. I noticed that Bruce Elving also carries the highly regarded Sony ICF 36 radio, the ICF 36 has also been discontinued by Sony.

That new Sangean really piques my interest. Thanks for all the info.

Good riddance. By any name, the current production Superadio III branded as GE or RCA has suffered from such quality control problems that they aren't worth buying. One guy in a yahoo newsgroup dedicated to Superadio has a small business replacing the guaranteed-to-fail tunings pots. (The pot is so cheap it falls apart just from normal tuning.) My SRIII was replaced - twice under warranty. When the third unit crapped out the same as the first two I put it back in the box. It's sitting there, waiting to be shipped off to that guy who actually knows how to fix the problem. Sigh...

Rick, I agree. I always thought the so-called Super Radio, while having adequate reception, was over-hyped, considering all the flaws you've mentioned. I think the Sangean PR-D5 is a far better "super radio." Jeff
