not the same radio as the sony, however it is a well made decent little performer. worth every bit of 30.00 bucks, to me anyway. got mine for 25.00 about 5 years ago. no sony, but damn respectable.

Reception not as good as Sony or less of a speaker or both?

the sony has a better sound jeff. am tuning is about eqaul and fm on the sony pulls better. all in all its a great radio for the money and its a "manly radio" series candidate for sure. for some reason ge didnt provide dial lighting on many models. that is feature i like to have. also, i like a tuning meter. ge also almost never provided that feature. the sony has a lighted dial and tuning eye in lieu of a meter. money wise though, youre gonna get this radio for one third the cost of the sony,, a good value.

I need a dial light. My eyes. I'll pay more.

I listen to radios almost every night, lights out. My wife isn't thrilled with it, but puts up with it! I use a cheap little mini flashlight with one AA battery in it to see dials on the radios without dial lights. And I'm not talking about a bright maglight---on the contrary, go for a keychain style cheapo from a dollar store. The light is dim enough not to bother anyone or hurt your eyes, but it works well.

When listening during my insomnia, I either use a radio with a dial light, or I listen to one particular station (meaning no dial light is needed).

I always listen using a pillow speaker or headphones when in bed, which keeps the wife happy.

45 minutes to go for the Sony TFM-8100W, ebay item 270308702927.

Today's version of the "ruggedized Sony" is on sale today on Amazon:

I was espying that Sony 3 years ago but balked because of doubts about the tuner and lack of a telescopic antenna.
