The RF-1600 is also one of my favorites, but not just for its AM reception. It also has great AM fidelity. I use it with my AM transmitter to rebroadcast music and old-time radio shows. Sounds awesome through the 1600. I always use mine on batteries, which seem to last forever.

I had to take mine apart when I got it in order to clean out the battery compartment. (Lemon juice does wonders. The battery terminals now look terrific.) I was immediately impressed by the length of the ferrite rod and by the overall heavy construction of the chassis.

The only improvement I would make to the RF-1600 would be to break up the shortwave into two bands. It really takes a safe cracker's touch to tune in anything in the crowded 49m band.

Tom, looks like the same radio as the Sangean WR-3, which is selling on Amazon today for $230. Mixed reviews.

where can i get a replacement mast antenna for the rf-1600?

Mike, your best bet is to scour ebay for a damaged RF-1600. I need a cord compartment cover for my 1600, so I am also hoping to find a broken 1600.
