There are some radios like the Panasonic Rf-2200 and the Superadios that don't improve significantly with a 8" loop antenna because they have a very optimized antenna but.... try them with 10-foot loop antenna and you'll see a big improvement !!!
By the way, a simple 30=foot wire hanging on the roof is unbeatable. Do I must remind you that AT NIGHT one of the most precious things of a radio beside sensitivity is called selectivity ? Yes, because at night the band is crowded with too many AM stations even on the same frecuency or very close to it, specially for those living near the sea CAUSING our radios to lose the ability to tune a signal clearly.

Having kids comes in handy here. Just send them outide and have them hold the wire whenever you need to use it. Lightning? That's for wusses to worry about.
