Teaching is a much more subtle art than is often granted. It is a drama, and the effective teacher must adopt a kind of persona. I often think of my subject matter as a kind of "script" and my presentation of that subject matter a kind of "performance".

This notion is as old as Plato. The muse inspires the poet, who is not really a creator but a medium of the muse. The oldest Greek poetry is "didactic" i.e. meant to teach, and poets, before they became the divas of the 5th c., considered themselves teachers. It's easy to see why knowledge would be put into poetic form at a time when paper was still scarce. It's easier to remember that way.

So I think it's only natural that you would want to entertain your students. In some respects, real teaching can't take place otherwise. You must draw them into the drama of your subject. Most of our learning doesn't take place in classrooms or through books but naturally as life unfolds around us. So too must the subject of the classroom be rendered dramatic.

I agree, Carlos. The script is lifeless unless you turn it into a performance with some unconscious and extemporaneous performance.

I find life an exciting business,The point is succinctness of expression.
