Jeff- I do believe Pandora (or my preference, Slacker) is the future of music-based radio. I'm not sure anything will replace local affiliates for regional talk and sports shows. I'm a Patriots fan, and listen to pre/post game talk on 98.5 The Sports Hub out of Boston.

And Internet "radio" is gonna get greedy and all become pay services. And your brand new glittering Internet "radio" will be useless. Just wait.

Pandora may or may not be the next wave of the future (I'm guessing not, but that's just MHO). What music services like Pandora lack is any kind of personality, and no local relevance.
Without those, you're looking at a version of Muzak, and those types of broadcast stations have been tried and have failed multiple times over the last 30 years. If you're going to listen to something like Pandora, you're better off just plugging in your MP3 player and calling it good.

Pandora is fun; I use it occasionally along with Slacker, streaming "real" radio stations, and an mp3 player, but I don't understand the thinking that newer technologies are "radio" or in some way a replacement for real radio. Some people don't get that it's fun to turn on a radio and NOT KNOW what you're going to hear next! Whoa!! They're probably the same people who have to have a GPS in the car so that they never, ever get lost.
