This Monster HTS850 surge protector offers Stage 1 protection and costs about $65, but you can spend close to $250 on a Monster HTS850 with Stage 3. Is Stage 1 enough?

From my perspective standalone surge protectors are passe. Thanks to product dumping by the Chinese government and the lack of environmental protections in China you can go to Costco and buy for $89 a Tripplite Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS.) Not only will your TV not receive a surge, it will not even be aware that there was the slightest ripple in the power lines.
Laptop computers essentially all have built-in UPS protection because of their batteries. However, if you still have any desktop computers a UPS is a necessity to protect the hard drive from a serious crash.
