This disgruntled Amazon reviewer writes about black versions of the Sangean ATS-909X, earlier models, having QC problems.
I hate buying radios in which you're trying to get a hold of the "right" serial numbers. That shouldn't be my job.
Anyone know anything about the black versions of the 909?
sounds like lock function may have been on

I would have been more comfortable with the review had the author run us through some troubleshooting (i.e. batteries in properly, not locked out, tried the reset, etc.). He didn't state that, he just said it was non responsive. I'd have to assume that he would check for these 'details', but I hate assuming.
More disturbing was the tale of repeated radios being sent back (and after he tinkered with them - a no no). Given it's price point, the ATS-909X should be fantastic and not the subject of doubtful reviews. Until such time as I'm reading raves about it, I'll skip it. Who needs to spend $250 a pop only to fret over getting a bad one?

Well I don't know about the black model, but I just got a white one today from Amazon Germany and it is pretty great. Definitely NOT deaf on AM and SW, like some early reviews stated.

I have a black one which has been all good. Reviews of the 909X did not seem to raise QC issues, rather were more along the lines of those who liked or disliked the radio. On a related note, the PL660 Yahoo group has seeing quite a few QC related posts over the past few weeks. I like both radios, however, the quality of the 909 is much better than the 660.

I have now had six ATS-909X samples to check out...three white ones from original production and three black ones from current production. All six have worked properly with no issues and no QC variations I could detect. However they have made at least one important change with current production and I have also discovered a characteristic which helps explain why different people have such different feelings about its sensitivity. I will be posting a complete update on my site within a few weeks and I think ATS-909X owners will find it interesting.
