Did Sangean ever modify the firmware so the voice alert volume can be lowered, rather than coming on at full blast? According to reviews on Amazon, some other brands of weather alert radios allow the listener to control the volume of the voice alerts.

Just got my Sangean radio and even though we've followed the manual to the letter, it is not alerting to weather broadcasts. Any suggestions?

There has to be a weather alert. Does your area experience things like tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, frequent flooding, lightning storms, other catastrophic weather events? If the weather is "normal," there won't be any alerts.
Otherwise, make sure your radio is located in a place in your house that maximizes reception--near a window, high as possible, not surrounded by metal.
