I always wanted a high end watch, but my issue is two-fold: 1)I could never settle on just one definitive watch. 2)I'm too much of pragmatist to own something expensive that ultimately functions the same (or better) as something cheap. Regardless, I rarely wear a watch anymore (or any jewelry, including a wedding band), but when I do it's a cheap G-shock. What do you think is the best value for a cheapish non-quartz mechanical watch?

A Seiko perhaps? How about the Invicta Grand Diver 3044, which uses a Seiko-owned movement?
I've been looking for a simple elegant atomic (radio controlled) solar watch forever. Casio makes some, see for example:

But the watch is cluttered and most of the watch casing is plastic.
This one by Citizen is better:

I just wish it was simpler looking without all those city names around the rim.

I think these watches, Vostoks, gives the most bang for the buck (or the ruble). http://www.smirs.com/en/russian-watches/vostok-watches/voctok-komandirskie-watches/

I have several Vostoks, both automatics and non-automatics. While the leather bands aren's very durable, the watches seem to be.
By the way, if someone would like a map of the London underground that's also a radio, here it is:

Aeromatic watches are available quartz or mechanical, including automatics. I have one and I like it very much. I love the styles----and the movements seem pretty good to me----well worth the price, which is usually between one or two hundred bucks----sometimes less on sale/close-out.

That "Tube" radio is a thing of beauty, Dylan!
