I'm paraphrasing KPCC's Larry Mantle, as he discussed the worldwide violence in reaction to a stupid movie:
When you defend your religion with mass violence, you do more to denigrate your religion than the very thing that you found offensive.

From everything I've read, the film was just a catalyst at the very most. Many factors conflated upon this film, which seems a proxy for deeper resentments.

The demonstrations are indicators of a much deeper problem for the US. Are we any better?

I concede we have a problem as those articles explain but the violence feeds the problem. Thus alas a vicious cycle has been set into motion. This won't go away.
