I also got the WR-5 when it was on the crazy $64 sale on Amazon last week. Love it so far but am also experiencing the weird date set problem. Whenever I try to set it to January 2013, it works but then a few hours later, it reverts to October 2012. Really frustrating.
I don't know if the software is bad or it's just my unit and yours. (some Amazon reviewers also have noted the problem). Maybe I'll ask Amazon to send a replacement unit to see if the problem occurs on that one as well.
By the way, I set the clock/date manually, rather than use the RDS CT method-- maybe I should try that instead?
I use the RDS method and it has worked great, I never tried to set it manually on my WR-5. Do you have similar problems when you set alarms? I've never used mine as an alarm clock, but I was just curious.

I'll try using the RDS method tonight when I get home from work. I used the manual method this morning so when I left for work, it says January 4, 2013, but I kind of expect to see it revert to October 4, 2012 when I arrive home later. I'll report back on using the RDS method!

BTW, I haven't tried out the alarm clock function yet. I don't plan on using the WR-5 as an alarm clock. But since the date is so prominently displayed under the clock when the unit is not playing radio/ipod, I would definitely want the date to be correct!

OK, I'm not sure exactly what I did. I think I set the date/time manually, rather than RDS. I did it yesterday morning and it's now been 36 hours and the date is still showing as correct. So maybe the weird glitchy-ness goes away after a day or two. Or maybe the RDS is overriding the manual setting and keeping it accurate. In any case, I'm happy it seems to be fixed! Great radio!!
