Recently I had talked myself out of getting a Seiko Tuna, a Boschett Diver, a WDP, etc., since the cost, $900-$1,200, seemed extragavant and wasteful.
So my neighbor and her boy were playing with my girls in our backyard this afternoon and we got to talking about purses and I find out that for her $1,500 is as low as she'll go for a good purse.
Suddenly I'm thinking, my watch obsession isn't so crazy after all.
Those people in THAT ward of the asylum are much crazier than we are in this ward.
Or something like that.
It is all relative, isn't it?

It's all relative indeed. That Sumo on eBay for 549 is gone. Seller's last 3 are 600. Dang. Too bad no one bit on my Invictas. I would have pulled the trigger. I wonder if a Zodiac Oceanaire would be as good as a Sumo for 100 less.

Never fear, my friend:

46,000 Yen = $491 last time I checked. I think that includes shipping but am not sure. That's via credit card; I'm not sure if PayPal has an extra fee attached.
Anyhow, I've hear good things about Higuchi - very reputable. Also check out SeiyaJapan.com - a lot of folks order from them. Its $564 there, including shipping.

Thanks, that's some peace of mind if I should pull the trigger. It seems there are fees either way, credit card or paypal.

So she pays the same for one of her "cheap/knock-around" purses that I pay for my best firearm? A top of the line 1911? Hmmm....suddenly, I'm feeling good about a few recent purchases I've made. I'm getting bargains!

Well of course it seems ridiculous to a collector of one type of thing that people would spend XXXX on another type of thing, but remember that it goes both ways.
I do wonder, though, if there are differences in terms of actual production cost. For instance, I have a feeling that a $2,000 Prada bag doesn't cost that much more to produce than a $100 Fossil bag, at least not as much as the difference between a $2,000 Seiko MarineMaster and a $100 Invicta. I could be wrong, though.

I was raised by Depression parents. I could never pay big dollars for a watch or purse. At the animal shelter where I volunteer, $1500 would do a lot of good. Of course, people can spend their money where they wish. Gotta admit, though, that 30 years ago, I did own half-interest in a $900 dairy goat, back when I made cheese and ice cream and such. So I guess it depends on where you are in your life. Right now, I'm in a different place.

But does the lady have a collection of 20 to 30 such bags, as you guys have in your watch collections? Buying one 2000 dollar bag every couple years is different than buying ten or more 500 dollar watches every year.

Following up on what Ed said, maybe it's the total cost of the collection that is more relevant, rather than the cost of any individual piece.
