Be aware that some samples of the CCR-2E make a "click" or "tick" noise while tuning. This happens with the tuning knob, up/down buttons or preset buttons. I experienced this noise on a sample that I tested, and found it somewhat irritating. This is a separate issue from the muting while tuning that Jay mentioned in his review. By the way, his CCR-2E doesn't make the "click" noise; it is completely absent.

The CCR-2E that I tested was slightly less sensitive on AM than the PR-D5 that I inherited from my dad. This is likely due to sample to sample variability. Also, the AGC on the CCR-2E was more fluttery than the rock solid AGC on the PR-D5. This AGC action is common to all of the DSP-based radios that I've tried.

The CCR-2E has wonderful sound quality. It's pretty crisp on AM. On FM the bass sounds very solid for a portable radio when the bass control is advanced somewhat. The bass and treble controls have a generous adjustment range. For a portable radio, I'd give it 9 out of 10 for sound quality. On the same scale, I'd give the PR-D5 a 2 on AM and a 4 on FM.

I ordered a CCRadio-2E just yesterday, so I'm eagerly awaiting its arrival. My fingers are crossed that it doesn't have the "click" issue or other glitches.

Does anyone know if the CCR-2E has the DSP in the audio stage only, with a conventional ceramic 450/455 I.F. filter? Or is it DSP all the way?

Gary

As far as I know, the CCRadio-2E uses DSP IF filters.
