If we had a mood meter, we would notice the moods of grocery shoppers could be broken up as thus:
Shoppers at listless generic supermarkets like Ralph's and Albertson's are in a dull, lifeless, even depressed mood.
Shoppers at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Bristol Farms are in a more upbeat mood in part because they know the stores have made an attempt to provide high quality, attractive products.
But the highest mood of all is the local farmer's market. Local products, local produce, local people selling their wares for a good price. Best food available. The shoppers are ecstatic. The downside is a few crazy people. One old man with a cane ate free samples of sliced white peaches while loudly spitting what he didn't like in a nearby trash can as the seller looked on with weariness.
I could live off the farmer's market, my diet would be bagels, fava beans, Greek cheeses, olives, humus, tahini, figs, dates, yogurt, eggs, sweet Maui onions.
Goodbye, generic supermarkets forever.
