I'm sad to report that rumors about the demise of the Grundig G4000 are most likely true. It is no longer featured on the Eton Corporation Website. I had a bad feeling when I saw that Amazon is only selling refurbished G4000s for $89.99. I love the interface and strong AM/FM, which is only rivaled by its more expensive competition, the $150 Eton E5.

I had the Eton E-1 for a year, paid about $400 for it. THAT was the best portable AM/FM/SW radio. Too pricey though, and some quality variability issues...some had exploding batteries! ...was made in India of all places. Nice sound, though..Very very sebnsitive...too bad there's really nothing worth listening to on shortwave anymore.

I tried short wave for a while but I too gave up on it. For sound I like my Tivoli Model 3, which I paid 65 dollars for, but it signal fades a bit.

If you want to read good reviews of "World Band" (ie, AM/FM/shortwave) radios and communications receivers, you should check out the annual editions of "Passport to Worldband Radio." It's in most libraries and big bookstores. It also has listings of worldwide broadcasting stations and schedules of when they're on the air. It's the bible for shortwave listeners (SWLer's).
