DXer.CA gives the Sony SRF-59 pocket radio the highest AM recommendation possible. The SRF-59 is analog (no presets), its headphones work as the FM antenna, it has a local/distant AM switch, and uses a single AA battery.
One Amazon reviewer complained about the low quality of the headphones. My question: If you exchange the cheapies with a better pair, are you still getting the same FM antenna action that presumably is part of the original headphones?
When I'm walking my dog around the block with a pocket radio, I need to toggle through presets, so this analog wouldn't work for me. I'd spend an extra $10 on the Sony SRF-M37W and get the presets.
Yes, the headphones are crap on the Sony SRF-59. I use Koss PortaPro headphones, a great value.
The reason many people prefer the SRF-59 is PERFORMANCE. You'll pay a price in poor performance for the convenience of presets, digital display, and so on.
BTW, the Sangean DT-200VX is also highly rated by hardcore AM listeners, I carry a DT-200VX pocket radio in my every day carry bag.

Tom, I have a Sangean DT 180. I use V-Moda buds, a gift. Pretty good but I get Tv interference on weak FM stations. Jeff

The Sangean DT 180 is a poor peformer, from most of the reviews I've read.
