I've noticed this behavior in other places (besides on the road while driving of course) too. And it usually seems to be in places where large quantities of goods and foodstuffs are being sold: ie, communal salad bars (ie, at Soup Plantation, someone always digs out all the chunks of turkey and artichoke before I can get any!). I think the current recession is exacerbating this desperate and rapacious "I got mine, screw you" behavior. "Looking Out for Number One" behavior has always been around, but it seems to have gone into ultra high gear recently.

The Number One ugliness results from a fragmented, "niche" society absent of communal spirit. I watch an Irish TV show on PBS on Saturday nights, Ballykissangel, a mid-brow melodrama. Its appeal for me is in part that it evokes a lost place and time when people were part of a community and possessed a "we're all in this together" spirit.
