Who cares? For the last 14 years, Eton has produced nothing but crappy gear, insisting the customer perform the quality control function for them.

What happened 14 years ago?

Mike W

Well, I suppose it was inevitable. After waiting since 2007 for the GS750, I just broke down within the last 2 or 3 weeks and bought both a CCrane-SW and a vintage Panasonic RF-2200. Now the GS750 gets a solid-sounding anouncement. Well, I guess that's what eBay is there for, for fools to churn their possessions on.

And if that's not enough new and vintage designs to juggle in your head, have you ever seen the Sony ICF-6000W? There is one on eBay right now, I just can't post links here anymore. I was thinking of bidding but that would make four radios. Pretty soon I'll have to be put on lithium or something. Anyway, the ICF-6000 (no "W") is the more interesting one, that one is AM/FM/SW.

The ICF-6000W is AM/FM/PSB. It looks just like the 6000. I'll give the eBay link a try anyway :

That would have been about the time the last of the Real Grundig radios were made, before they outsourced all the jobs to China and subsequently went bankrupt.

Eton continued using the Grundig name after that, slapping it on Chinese radios, like the Satellit 750.

I'm very fond of Ten-Tec these days. Their radios are Made in the USA. How sad that phrase is so rare and such an anachronism now.

I'm sure the professional reviews of the 750 will be good. RadioIntel and Passport will get units, play with them for a weekend, and write a review.

That's fine and dandy, but anything works for the first weekend.

Wait a year and see what people are saying in the 750 Yahoo Group. That will be a much better indicator of QC issues.

Mike, I have to admit I covet that Sony 6000 but I'm skeptical of antique radios after buying a half dozen of them. An Ace hardware man jerry-rigged the stripped antenna on my Panasonic RQ and it took him nearly an hour. I watched with wonder.

Terry, I should have known the demarcation line into bad quality started fifteen years ago or so. I will probably delay the buying of the 750 for a long while. Thanks for the info.

Terry

Some Chinese radios are rather excellent

I had great luck with the "Grundig" Yacht Boy 400 PE. After years of use, that little sucker still has great sound, superb sensitivity, and works flawlessly.

The last "real" Grundig might have been the Satellit 700. Looks like something I'd love to have in my Radio Fetishist's collection. ;^)

Mike W

Terry, I had both of those radios. I don't like small radios, but if I did, I'd want a YB400 again. No tuning knob, but it got about as much sound quality out of one small speaker as you could expect.

The 700 is simply the single best digital portable design ever, IMHO, but is mediocre as a receiver. If you bought one expecting a DX rig, you might be let down.

jeffrey McMahon

Terry, I have what I think is a Yacht Boy clone, the Grundig G4000. I love it. In many ways, it's my favorite radio.

For some reason the 700 never intrigued me.

kr

damn, i just bought a ccrane-sw off amazon for $139... i think this radio has really impressive reception, but the layout doesn't excite me, kind of boring... anyhow, unless the 750 comes out in 30 days, looks like i'm stuck with the ccradio...

should i send it back, betting on the come?

thanks

jeffrey McMahon

If you're not in love with your C.Crane and have a radio that meets your reception needs, send it back. There's always a new radio coming down the pike.

My CCrane is in the guest room and gets rarely used, but I'll keep it. I like the FM reception.

Tom Welch

In the past, I've owned both the Sat 700 and Ten-Tec 320 radios. I loved the Sat 700!

The Eton E100 is on sale for $45, follow link: http://www.durhamradio.com/e100-eton-sw-receiver.html?MMCF_DX-E100

Carrie

I have one. I rarely use it. I'll sell it for 40.

Terry

I'm loving the RX-320D

Never tried a PC radio before

My Reptile Brain tells me it wants a Perseus:

It liked listening to the Samples linked at the left of that page

jeffrey McMahon

Terry, what is the full name of the RX-320D? And when will the Perseus be mass produced in the States?
