When I first heard former Sex Pistols band member Steve Jones on 103.1 Indie Rock doing his Jonsey's Jukebox show a year ago, I thought to myself: What the hell? A disaffected Brit is nursing his hangover in bed and we're supposed to listen to his stream of consciousness, the alcohol-soaked ruminations of an unctuous satyr who talks like he's luxuriating in drunken decadence.
But Jonsey Boy has grown on me. First, his eclectic playlist is fantastic. Second, he dismisses professional standards, like remembering all the details of the bands he's played and his informal slovenly, laconic approach makes it feel like you're hanging out with Jones in his living room while he plays you his favorites. To add to the sense of intimacy, he often performs an acoustic guitar version of the song he has just played and often he sounds damn good.
Finally, there's the Sexy Beast thing going on. If you don't know what I mean, I'm referring to the film
Sexy Beast, directed by Jonathan Glazer. In the opening scene Ray Winstone is by the pool in the south of Spain nursing a hangover presumably. He's lying there by the pool grumbling about the hot weather, coming up with hundreds of synonyms for the word "boiling." His accent is thick with hedonistic decadence to a satirical degree. Affected or not, Jonsey Boy captures that hilarity.
