Here's a link for the $50 HD Rebate. This rebate should apply to ALL HD radios. While my experience with HD radio was not positive due to a lack of night-time AM reception, I have heard great things about the Sony XDR-F1HD "radio," which is really a tuner. With the rebate, the XDR is a very attractive $50.

I'm going to see if anything's changed over the last year. I ordered this Sony tuner. (what the heck, it's just 50 bucks.)
I'll let you know if it's any better/worse around here than it was last year when I also purchased/sold a disappointing Sangean HD-1.

I had that Sangean HD-1. I hated it.
BTW, there are no polarity symbols on my Sony ICF-5900. I don't know if I should set my new adapter to negative or positive. Can I try both and not ruin the Sony?

It should be center negative, sleeve positive. But I cannot find confirmation for this anywhere. Ed, others may know.

Paul, thanks. I'll take note.
Three Quarters Blind: I'll post your comment. Thank you.

I'll look into the hyperlink function. Thanks.

It won't hurt to try center negative for a second or two... if the radio comes on, that's the right polarity; if it doesn't, reverse it to center positive.

Thanks, Ed, the adapter just came in the mail. I'll give it a try.

Thanks for rebate link. I am looking to buy a Jensen JIM-525. Do you think HD Radio is really worth the higher price? What do you mean about night time issues. I read conflicting things. This site http://www.hdradioreview.com seems to say yes, but looking for more advice. Thanks

John, While I'm unfamiliar with the Jensen JIM-525, I personally do not have an interest in HD radio. I owned a Sangean model nearly 2 years ago and was unimpressed with AM sound, especially at night. My Sony ICF-5900 and 5500 sound amazing on AM and FM. For modern radios, I'd check out the Boston Acoustics Horizon Duo.

"IS IBIQUITY RENEGING ON A REBATE OFFER?" August 29, 2007
"CGC #791 mentioned a limited-time price for the entry level Radiosophy HD100 digital radio receiver and there was a handsome rebate offered from iBiquity. It now appears that iBiquity's rebate contractor is balking on issuing some rebates, and we'd like to determine the extent of the problem. If you purchased the Radiosophy HD100 and were (a) given a rebate or (b) not given a rebate but believe that you properly filed all the material required for a rebate, we'd like to know. We'll let you know if significant trends develop."
http://www.bext.com/_CGC/2007/cgc807.htm
If you check our AVS HD Radio Forum forum for "HD Radio Rebate", you will see that getting the rebates is a problem - iBiquity is ripping off some consumers, by keeping the rebate money. iBiquity is so desperate, they are waiving their $50/radio chipset royalty fees. More nonselling clunkers from the HD Radio manufacturers.

The HD Radio Review web site above claims the existence of a BA Horizon Solo HD Radio and even reviews it! This radio is nowhere to be found! So much for a trustworthy site ...

This extra shiny system has a "vacuum-loading" CD player, a hidden 30-pin iPod connector on top, and an HD Radio receiver. A USB connection in the back lets you hook up MP3 players, or drive-based sources of WMA and MP3. I

Paul, that's an absurd radio. I probably won't post today because my dog got sick from flea spray. She's so bad she's hospitalized. I hope to post in the next day or so.

Aw, I didn't know you had a dog, Jeff. Hope she makes it.

yeah, she's not happy at all. I hopefully pick her up from the vet today and this time she'll be better. when my dog's not happy, I'm not happy.
