Dear Herculodge: Why are so many people addicted YouTube? Dear Reader: Most people at some time or other have had the fantasy of becoming invisible, a condition that would afford them the power, a very false one, of omniscience, that is, the ability to secretly trespass into the private, forbidden worlds of others in the hope that a bite of forbidden fruit will sate their gnawing emptiness. Sadly, this venture does not achieve their desired results but leaves them emptier and emptier. The sight-seers' compulsion to watch YouTube for countless hours is fed by those who open their private lives by posting themselves on YouTube. These YouTube performers are as compulsively driven to show-off as much the YouTube watchers are driven to watch "invisibly." Thus sight-seers and attention-seekers exist in an addictive symbiosis. YouTube uses modern technology to reinforce this dysfunctional interdependence, a feature imitated by MySpace, facebook, etc.
