On ABC's Lost, a show that's not afraid to deal with metaphysics, existentialism, and the conundrum of free will vs. predestination, the final episode of Season 5 featured the unctuous master manipulator Ben seeking out the ominous, omnipresent Jacob who is an ambiguous Heavenly or Hellish Father.
Inside the dark temple, the tormented Ben, wielding a knife, approaches Jacob and says he has been ignored by Jacob for too long. He has obeyed but he has suffered greatly. All everyone told him to do was to wait, to be patient, to accept his suffering.
He will not be Jacob's obedient sycophant no more. He stabbed Jacob in the chest. Is this Ben's rejection of God? Of a false god? Of a devil? We shall have to wait for Season 6 to find out.
