I hesitate to agree that the Altima is manly. It's nice enough, but manly? The CEO of Renault (of all people) is the one who got Nissan back on the right track, when Renault bought into Nissan a few years back.
To buy a true "manly" car, you might need to go used, and vintage used at that. Didn't William Conrad, as "Cannon" drive a mid 70's LTD Coupe or Thunderbird (The huge Thunderbird that was the same platform at the Lincoln Mark IV)? The mid 1970's "personal luxury cars" such as the Eldorado, Mark IV, Thunderbird, Toranado, Riviera----those were the real man cars. My 1969 Cadillac DeVille went as far as dividing the dashboard and slanting all controls (including radio) sharply toward the driver. The man was in control---driving, setting climate, picking radio stations----"A Man's Car For A Man's World is probably what they would have liked to run as the ad tagline. Alas, Billy Jean King put a stop to all that by thrashing Riggs.
If you buy new---most manly is probably a Crown Victoria or Grand Marquis in dark blue or black.

This Maxima is a much different, superior beast over the Altima. And the price for here in LA is exceptional.
Manly? Maybe not. Priced well. yes.

Oh, definitely, the Maxima at that price is good. That's weird---I could have sworn I read Altima and didn't really look at the photo. The jury is still out on the new Maxima. I like it---but the previous model was more chiseled looking---more "masculine" if you will.

Huesby: That VW is beautiful---but I stand by my assertion that the Grand Marquis or Crown Vic is a more manly car. Fact is, I could picture a female drug company rep or realtor driving around in that sleek VW. What woman will drive a Grand Marquis? Maybe an old lady---a widow, whose husband bought it, that's who.

Does this qualify?

DB: No, that is a soccer Mom car---a soccer Mom who is married to a really, really rich dude. Or, a soccer Mom who founded E-Bay or something.

She'd be moving fast - 378KW and 630NM
Posted by: db | May 27, 2009 at 11:16 PM
Why would anyone need to go that fast in a station wagon?

Jeff, I think you need to explore manly cars as a thread on your blog. If you look at current production cars, how about the Dodge Challenger? Sure, parts may fall off of it as you go down the road, but a manly man can stop the car, open the trunk, get the welding torch out, and weld that shit back on.

I worry though that the Challenger is a mid-life crisis car for dudes who went to high school like I did in the 70s.

how about a manly bike?

I think the Challenger qualifies as manly. I can't picture a woman driving that car. Chrysler got it right on the exterior styling, though I wish the interior/dash was more retro. It looks like it was lifted out of a Caravan. The new Chevy Camaro looks promising, even as Chrysler and GM are becoming two divisions of Obama Motors.
