On the Sony website, we can see the Jackal, an all-in-one with rugged, manly-radio features.

Way Cool! I wish the Sony History website was more complete - it skips a bunch of classic Sony shortwave rigs. Still it was a treat to look back over the stuff I couldn't afford in college.

I love it when radios have names---like Sony's Jackal or the GE "Searcher" which had police bands.

There is a searcher on ebay right now. about $40 shipped. http://cgi.ebay.com/GE-General-Electric-Searcher-7-2995-AM-FM-PS-Scan-Radio_W0QQitemZ390059444204QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVintage_Electronics_R2?hash=item5ad15ac7ec&_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116 I found one of these at a rummage sale once for $3. All the metal control bezels where missing and i enjoyed figuring out what all the buttons did. It got very good reception if i remember correctly.
A more manly radio than even the jackal is also on ebay right now:

Are you man enough for a 48 pound "portable?" Chances are if you can afford this beast you can afford to hire a radio boy to haul it around beside you. $3600 new in '76? couldnt you get a mustang for $3600 in '76? I look forward to your comments Jeff.

Also on the Searcher: those four sliding toggles and corresponding mini-tuners under the always missing door above the awesome speaker grill is actuallly a preset system for the PSB. You can have police weather and air traffic control dialed in on its little PSB VU-like tuner and if you dont touch the mini tuners you can switch from one to the other a la much later memory enabled units. Definitiely worth $3, maybe worth $40.
