In Jonathan Safran Foer's provocative Eating Animals, a book that in part chronicles his conversion to vegetarianism, perhaps one of the more moving passages is when Foer interviews Mario Fantasma, the owner of a slaughterhouse and asks the owner if he ever had difficulty killing the animals. Fantasma mentioned one instance when it was very difficult: The cow licked his face several times and leaned on him before he killed the affectionate beast.
