Gizmag seems impressed with the sound and specs of the Sangean Fatbox FB-100. I'm seriously tempted to buy this, but do I really need it?

Do we really need any of these radios after the first dozen or so?
I'm in the same place you are Jeff. I'd be a lot more interested in the Fatbox if I didn't already own the Sangean U3. It's just too hard to justify getting one. However, I have a hard time using the U3 for outside activities because Kate wants it in the kitchen where it sounds really great and tunes just about everything.
To help talk yourself out of buying one, remember that Stereo is largely wasted outdoors. It would be like having two U3s operating side by side since it looks like it uses the same speaker as the U3. We also don't know enough about the tuner performance yet.
It also looks like a small, red Fender Twin Reverb guitar amp. Hmm, that's actually a plus for me since I also have 6 guitars, a bass and 3 amps. Maybe I should stop right here before I make things worse.

$220 price doesn't seem bad considering the built-in battery. I wish it had headphone jack though. I'd probably geek-out and use it as a bedside radio then.

According to the manual, the Fatbox requires 8 D size batteries (NiMH, NiCad or alkaline) for primary power and two AA size batteries for memory backup.

According to the flyer, the batteries are not included.

I imagine 8 D size NiMH batteries might run $80 to $100.

So the rechargeable batteries are NOT included? Whoa. Forget about it. I'm not spending $300 on that Fatboy. No way.

Checking on eBay, it looks like 8 Powerizer D size NiMH batteries can be had for $52. These batteries sell for $11 apiece on another site.

I may give these a try in my CCR-SW. A set of four runs just $26.50.
