Well said, Blake:
My sister in law has a Grundig G6 which she wanted after playing with mine. She told me that she can’t get her shortwave stations with her radio on her night stand and that she needs to take the radio outside. I asked her what kind of light bulb she uses sure enough she is using a curly cue florescent bulb.
I checked her radio and it works fine. We only use incandescent light bulbs in our house and get great reception. If you move to the computer room reception trouble begins with all of my radios. I have a desk near a monster power strip for an entertainment center and I can’t use this desk for SW dxing for that reason. If I move 12 feet away to the coffee table reception is superb.
I can get decent SW reception in our basement. However as soon as someone turns on the treadmill AM reception deteriorates and SW reception is gone turning completely to static. Great reception is much like the 3 L’s of realestate, Location Location Location.
Can anyone comment about how this changes with grounded external antennas? I just took the plunge and bought the closest thing to a real desktop shortwave receiver I've ever had and plan to mount a good antenna either in the yard or the attic. Are you still at the mercy of interference along the feedline? Is there a way around that?
