Yes, a bacterial plague of apocalyptic dimensions is on its way, but don't expect R&D to do much about it. Antibiotic pharmaceuticals, usually given is one-week dosages, don't make a lot of money. In contrast, cholesterol drugs are prescribed for the life of the patient. That's big bucks and more money for research. So even though many scientists see a bacterial plague coming, there isn't proportional research on this impeding crisis.
