Addressing some of the issues raised in Radio Russ' comparison of the Sangean WR-1 and WR-2, Tim writes:
I bought a Sangean WR 1 and was very pleased with it. Yet, I could see how people complained about its "boominess." When the WR 11 came out as a replacement, I bought one, intending to replace my WR 1 with it. The WR 11 is less boomy and a bit brighter. But in the end, I preferred the WR 1, so I actually sold my WR 11! The lower end of the WR 1 is naturally affected by the immediate environment.
I suppose in a kitchen or bathroom, and in solid settings in general, the bass could become annoying. I have it, however, on a shelf in my study where it sounds full and well-rounded. Yes, tone controls would have been tremendously helpful. But in the end, I'm quite pleased with the WR 1, and I think it offers a rich sound and decent reception, more so than most other tabletop radios in production.

Here's a new internet radio that in the past has received positive reviews and is coming to the USA July 1st, 2010: http://www.pure.com/us/

In the mid 1980's we bought my father in law a Sony ICF 9580 Table Radio. It's still going strong 25 years later. To my ears it has the best sound (and dial feel) of any table radio made in the last 30 years, including the 2 current Sangeans.
I think we paid about $100 new (as I recall it was the top of the Sony line), but it usually doesn't go for much more than $50 when it shows up on Ebay. I'd highly recommend it.
Currently there are none on Ebay, but I found a picture on Amazon of all places. The caption says the date is 1976, but I'm sure that's for an earlier model number (there were several variations over the years but the 9580 was considered the best).
