Not sure if you have posted on your blog about this, but it looks like Silicon Labs has recently come out with a new DSP chip - this time one that supports ANALOG tuning! http://news.silabs.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=4639 I wonder when we'll see the first analog radio take advantage of this DSP chip?

Eton is primarily a marketing company with little technical expertise and even less passion for radios. We've watched Eton bounce back and forth between using Eton and Grundig labels on your products, so who really knows what their marketing strategy is.

Eton now appears to be focused on emergency radios as their primary market niche. I believe Eton uses the Grundig nameplate under license for the North American market only...but who knows!

jeff, change of subject, but can somebody run down some info on HD radio for a friend of mine? here is the tuner he is looking at buying:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-XDRF1HD-HD-Radio-Tuner/dp/B00168Q248

the question is, in the backwoods where we live is this even useful? thanks.

Jeffrey McMahon

I doubt it's useful. I had one and sold it in two days. Horrible AM, horrible external AM antenna, had to have all these wires tangled everywhere for speakers. I really hated this radio. I don't think HD helps backwoods environments.

The G8 does have the DSP chip as people have discovered by modifying them to be controlled on a computer.

The Yahoo Ultralight DX group has instructions on how to modify this radio using software and making the hardware for the USB to work.

I have a G8 and Ive read somewhere that you can align the AM antenna for better reception by taking the back off the radio and sliding the coil up or down the ferite tube.
I got one of the first ones and sent it off to
Kiwa and Craig [ who never worked on a G8 before } tweaked the sound path { the way he does to the G5's }and it sounds great but I didn't ask about the ant. alignment and at the time didn't know about it.
I got the impression Craig didn't want to work on another G8 cause they're just to damn small
It seems to me I read somewhere back there was somebody who would do this for a small fee.
Does anyone know someone who does this.
