Thanks, Ante, for sending me this Ultralight DX Group review:
I received few days ago my PL310, that I bought on ebay after reading so many enthusiastic comments here and on the web. I have since performed few tests and comparisons, and I must say I am impressed!
A lot has been said on its performance on FM and MW, so I won't touch these topics; I will be mainly focused on shortwave performance.
I compared the PL310 with the DE1103 and DE1102, that notoriously are references as far as SW portables are concerned. The tests were made using built-in telescopic antennas, fully extended (the length is different..) , and all the radio were on batteries.
To sum up what I found on shortwaves:
a) the PL310 received everything that was audible on the DE1103 or DE1102, even the weakest signals;
b) on the weakest signals the only problem is the well-known softmute, that causes some audio pumping;
c) the shortwave performance of the PL310 is far better than that of the Kchibo KK-S60L, that uses the same chipset;
d) the power consumption of the PL310 is fantastic: with low audio and lights off it draws only 22 mA; with lights on it draws 28 mA. For comparison, the DE1102 draws about 45 mA and the DE1103 about 100 mA !!
e) as a last test, I connected few metres of wire as an "external" antenna, and there was no trace of overloading and/or intermodulation.
For 40 dollars, a fantastic radio !

Michele
