We visited my brother and his family in Albany a few days ago where you have the highest concentration of mid-priced excellent eateries anywhere in California. We had lunch at the Little Star (its owners are defectors from Zackary's) pizzeria and I had Black Butte Porter with my Mediterranean deep-dish pizza.
It occurred to me as I sipped that cold, icy porter, with hints of malt and black strap molasses, that a good porter is better than a good wine.

I feel the same way. I really appreciate a good ale or porter. I would also recommend "Duchesse De Bourgogne" if you like a porter. Nice head with good lacing. A wonderful sour characteristic with complexities unfolding as the drinking progresses. Almost tastes like a champange. Check out these reviews:

Jeff - I'd never heard of Albany, CA before. Using Google Maps, I see that it's a suburb of Berkeley.

(a good porter is better than a good wine)
I'm a wine and beer man (don't care for the hard stuff). I can't really say I like one over the other, it all depends, and the bottom line is, it's nice to have a choice.
That said, with pizza, I prefer a nice red, not beer.
