Having recently obtained a Sony TFM 7400W, I decided to compare it with my C Crane CC-EP.
Both of these radios are strong performers and I do see other similarities. They are roughly the same size. Both have AM-FM and Sony adds the PSB (Public Service Band). Both are analog and both have large tuning knobs positioned on the right side of the cabinet.
In creating the CC-EP, C Crane wanted to offer a "traditional" radio for enthusiasts who are looking for a change of pace from presets, digital read-outs and the like. If not for the PSB on the Sony, it's almost as if C Crane used the TFM 7400W as a benchmark.
I love listening to talk stations. Since my CC-EP was delivered, I've logged more hours on that radio than on any other set I own. I feel strongly that for talk radio, the CC-EP is as good as you'll find at a reasonable price. In fact, based on my enthusiasm for it, I sold my C Crane "CC Radio" which was previously my go-to radio for talk. But I'm listening to the old (mid 1970s?) Sony right now, and it too has a really pleasant sound for talk.
The Sony sounds better on batteries than with its power cord (no interference) but that is true of many of my radios. Considering its age and the fact that it was obviously well used, the Sony performs beautifully. I have to wonder if the C Crane will age as well as the Sony has.
All in all, these are two very similar radios, built decades apart. That statement indicates that C Crane attained their goal with the EP.
