Well, anyone who has seen the steaming bag of meat they put in the food prep area should know something is up. I wonder if Del Taco is any better?
Just reinforces going to a place like Poquito Mas for something "fresher" (although, you wont get a 49 cent taco there)

If you put enough of the taco sauce on the beef, it might as well be New York Strip Steak----all you taste is the seasoning. I wonder if the filler is unhealthy? TVP (protein)can be used as filler and it would make the beef far healthier. But I have a feeling they're not doing that.

Aw nuts - I'd rather eat a piece of jerky and an apple. Handful of dry-roasted peanuts. Shot of good tequila (err - after work).

When I was a teenager I would down about 10 Taco Bell tacos (I worked there my senior year in high school) in about a minute. Each taco went down like a cocktail olive. I still crave them regardless of their beef percentage.

What I want to know is how does Jack-In-Box get away with calling their semi-circular grease sandwich a taco? Don't get me wrong, @ 2/99¢ I've eaten more than my share. I used to live 2 blocks from a Jack... Back in the last century (the '90s) those grease sandwiches would from time to time be offered @ 3/99¢ so inevitably I'd indulge in 3 or 6. After a lengthy meditation on the porcelain throne, I'd vow to NEVER consume those grease sandwiches again no matter how great a deal I thought I was getting. Then the special deal would again pop up. The results were predictable, gorge, dump, repeat. I no longer live within walking distance from a Jack, so I no longer have to give in to temptation.

Actual it is Texturized vegetable Protein (TVP) if on has ever had Freeze dried emergency rations, it's Chicken, Beef,Pork ect. is actually 100% artificial for the fats in the meat are what turn rancid in long term food storage. That being said that was Taco Bells little wrinkle was that they put some real beef and fat in it for flavoring the TVP. As far as it being unhealthy is not true actually theirs less fat and colesterol than if it was 100% Beef.
I wondered how long they were going to get away with saying it was all Beef when it was not. But now it's going to bite them in the butt hard.

Drew: I guessed that it wasn't TVP, but if it is, more power to Taco Bell. That would indeed make their "taco stuff" more healthy to eat than even 100% beef. You could put that stuff in sloppy joes, even meatballs---it stretchs the beef, doesn't mess with the flavor much and is full of protein.

Oh but it is beef--100%:

I guess they can make the claim that their filler is actually "seasoning." I actually don't care. As long as what they are serving isn't poison, who cares? It's tasty food and it's dirt cheap. I miss "Border Lghts"---lower calorie versions of their favorites.

Americans love cheap food.
Posted by: Tom Welch | January 26, 2011 at 01:17 PM
Tom: Very true, but we're not alone. Many countries in the world like free food (from Americans sending it to them). And of course, KFC and McDonalds, Burger King and others are springing up anywhere the economy is getting stronger, like in China. We're exporting our bad habits to them and they're loving it.

And to add to Angelo's comment, these countries that adopt the American fast food model will soon suffer from all the medical problems we face on a macro level.

"As long as what they are serving isn't poison, who cares"
Angelo, we should ALL care that not only it isn't poison but that it not make us sick on any level.
Although there are people out there who would classify some of those seasoning ingredients as 'poison'.

Oops, now it's 88% not 100% beef:
