Very good review. It would be interesting to see a side by side comparison between this radio and a Grundig G3 of a later serial number. The one advantage I see with the G3 is that is has an audio line in for MP3 players. I originally got a Grundig G3 right after it came out. I returned it because the sync detector did not work, the tuning knob had significant wobble, and the keys were not backlit when eton radio told me they would be. I have thought about giving the G3 another try but the Tecsun 660 may be a better option. I feel the G5 that I have has very nice audio quality especially for the size. I wonder how the Tecun 660’s audio quality compares to the G5 or even the G3. Has anybody compared them?

Craig

I would consider the G5 to have slightly better sound quality than the 660. Of course, sound quality is always subjective. To my ears, the G5 is a little bit crisper. The speaker seams to replicate the higher and lower frequencies with better response. I think the audio amplifier cicuitry is more powerful than the 660 which allows it to be "turned up" with less distortion.
But again, this is all subjective.....

Partly because of the original post of this review, Ive owned a PL660 for about a month now. Got if from ANON-CO. I am impressed with it's performance on all bands - especially SW which is why I got it. I am especially impressed by it's audio quality. Very pleasing to listen to for extended periods. I like more bass tone when listening to World Band, like the classic wood cabinet radios. The Grundigs all sounded too tinny to me. Oh, and before I forget...The SYNC works. Period.

I have also owned a G6, G5 and a G3 - all of which have been sold or returned to the point of purchase.

I love my 660, and will probably order a Silver model as well just to play with or have as a backup.

Appreciate that description Craig as it makes sense. Sounds like the 660 may be better for use outdoors since it plays louder. To me the G5 has an intelleligable yet rich and pleasing tone. Easy to listen to. Sounds like the 660 still has pretty decent audio. For me the sound quality is as high a priority as reception. That is the only reason why I have not purchased a Sony 7600GR. It does not have a pleasant sound. If it did I would own one. My Grundig 350 probably gets used the most because of its great sound on talk radio. Not sure if a PLL tunned digital radio is capable of sounding as good as a good analog radio.

i have owned a tecsun 660, g5 and a 7600gr. now i'm no audiophile and only really listen to am/fm but can say that the 660 gave the best results re audio quality with the g5 second and the 7600gr third. 660 sound was richer, bass fuller and could easily cope with louder listening levels without distortion.

the 7600gr would ultimately be my preferred choice of the 3 units given its excellent build quality but for a couple of major shortcomings. firstly and of greater importance to me, the audio quality lets this unit down. it really does 'sound' like a unit that has been on the market for 10yrs. secondly, no inbuilt battery charging feature as seen on newer shortwave radios.

i didn't own the g5 for very long. it was returned after the backlight failed.

i am more than happy with the 660 and would recommend without hesitation to others. purchase info: black unit (dec 2010, 2nd edition) on ebay (anon-co) for £70 inc p&p.
