I sold my TFM-8000 on eBay for around 90 or so. In addition to the rich sound and silky smooth tuning dial, I remember it being a great SW performer off the whip. It's odd how today the enjoyment gained from SW listening, ironically, seems to be associated not with programming but with the radios themselves, a kind of nostalgic interactive experience.
A fruitful day yesterday at a flea-market: I snagged two vintage Pannys for $20 for the both of them (10 bucks each), an rf-1060 and an rf-7270. After a few sprays of DN5 they both came alive. The rf-1060 lives up to its reputation on AM. In PA incredibly I can select between Cleveland, New York, Toronto, Boston, and Philadelphia, all of which occur between 1000 and 1100. It's insane - are conditions today particularly good for DX? Sadly the indicator doesn't function - any ideas for solutions?
The rf-7270 is a monster, maybe the heaviest "portable" I've ever handled. Amazingly the tape player works on this 40 year old unit. Huge sound. Performance on AM not like the rf-1060. FM sounds phenomenal (reminds me of the rf-888), even though the antenna is broken off. It's a weird antenna and I'm not sure how to replace it.
It's a cool radio but not really my style - if someone wants to pay for the shipping I'd be happy to send it to a faithful Herculodge reader, maybe for a trade or something, or just for freebies.
