Photographer Bruce Davidson explained to The World's host Lisa Mullins that he hopes the girl runaway he photographed in the streets of London is still alive. He remains haunted by the image he captured and hopes the girl will identity herself.
Looking at the photo, I'm reminded of something Colin Cowhered once said: You often see teen runaways with stray dogs and cats because they find an unconditional love in these animals they couldn't find at home.
While the unconditional love thing is a lovely trope that makes us all feel good, there's a much more practical reason that homeless people get pets.
If they get arrested, the police have to call the local animal control and wait for them to show up to take the pet, this is a hassle for the cops and makes it less likely that the homeless person will be arrested on a whim.
