Ed S.

Arguably the greatest movie of all time is about amassing and collecting and the ultimate failure the collector has in recapturing his early innocence and happiness: Citizen Kane.
But still, as social animals, we have that need to "connect" and if hobbies and collections provide some connection, even an imperfect one, it is better than nothing. We are all separate inside our skin--that's the human condition.

Jeffrey McMahon

Well said, Ed. The only alternative to connection is the dreaded condition of solipsism.

Mark Roberts

Well said, Ed. If it's not doing harm to anyone, what concern is it of David Brooks' (or anyone else)? Disclaimer: I find David Brooks to be a smarmy twit, so that opinion is no doubt coloring my reactions.
