A watchmaker in my area (top repair shop) told me that "patina" is desireable. That includes little scratches and nicks you're talking about.

i won't even mention the wacky discoloration that's occurring on the rose gold noma IV i have (even though I just did). Good luck fixing that....

Nah, you just need to buy a better watch that has a durable DLC coating on it. Those manufacturers trying to climb up from "fashion brand" status tend to use lower-quality coatings just to look cool but with little thought to durability. Citizen watches use a version of DLC that won't scratch even against steel. A patina is a tarnish that forms on metal due to some sort of chemical reaction; it isn't an accumulation of light scratches. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for.

Well, most watches of that caliber are subject to wear and tear, but I'm pretty sure they are all durable. I totally agree with Ulysses, it's just a matter of choosing a better watch and maintaining it.
