Worthy of the Manly Watch Hall of Fame: The Invicta Force 4830

 

 

For watch addicts whose collection run to three or four dozen watches, no matter what watch they wear there is always the anxiety and despair of the watches they are NOT wearing. Watch addicts agonize over what watch to wear.

 

 

I have a friend, for example, who works in banking, and he gave away ALL his watches because, he said, he'd spend hours at night matching dozens of watches with his suits in preparation for the next day. He almost had a breakdown. After 10 years of owning no watches, I ruined his life by giving him a couple over the last year. He loves them and is hooked again. To him, I apologize.

 

 

With all these watches, there comes the question: What if you could wear only one? For me, the watch that I go to again and again that never stops singing on the wrist is the Invicta Force 4830. It has two crowns. The one on the left operates the internal unidirectional bezel.

 

 

There is a more rare version, the F0046, that is identical but has no left crown. Both models are no longer made but are sometimes found on eBay and elsewhere. Both sell out very quickly.

 

 

The Force is a masterpiece in masculine watches with its triple black monochromatic color scheme, its easy to read big Arabic numerals, and its magnifying globe crystal. If I could only have one, the triple black Force would be it. 

 

 

 

G-Shock Aviation G4000 Replacing G3000

 

 

I was in Watch City (at Del Amo Mall in Torrance, CA) today and I held both the old  G-Shock G3000 and its newer incarnation, the G4000.

I have to say I was underwhelmed by both. The differences are minor. One has a 9 numeral at the exclusion of the 3 wile the other has the 3 at the exclusion of the 9. 

One thing to point out: Case size is listed at 50mm, but this is deceiving. You'd have to count the outer bulges on the left and right of the bezel. In reality, this dial looks like a 45mm, very small. 

Since Amazon is selling the G3000 for $120 cheaper than the G4000, it's the more compelling buy. 

Invicta Diver Reserve Showdown: The Ocean Reef 6761 Vs. the Ocean Hawk 6310

Two Invicta Reserve Diver watches come in at significantly different prices. On average the 46mm Ocean Reef is between $160-225 and the 48mm Ocean Hawk is between $235-300, about $50 more typically. 

Both are reserve, built to reserve specifications, but only one feels like a reserve and that is the less expensive Ocean Reef. Built like a tank with a screw-down crown and satin gunmetal finish, the Ocean Reef is a masterpiece of looks and build quality.

Now for the Ocean Hawk. I found mine used in mint condition on eBay for $150. It looks great in all the photos and video I've seen. However, in person it's a bit of a disappointment. Worse, is the feel. It lacks the heavy tank quality of the Ocean Reef and honestly feels on the cheap side. 

Even worse, the crown doesn't screw down. You push our pull to operate. 

No battle here. The easy winner is the Ocean Reef. 

Stubby Ferrite Rods Can Ruin a Radiophile's Day

 

Regarding the post about the new Degen DE1128/Eton G2, Paul S. writes:

I have been reading the specs on the newer 2-AAA battery type of SI48XX chips. These ALL show very stubby ferrite rods as being acceptable. Meh, poor MW design right from the chip-maker.

In the move towards consumerism, some enthusiasts will be dissapointed.

Price Drop for the G-Shock Aviation GW3000: $230 Plus $5.27 Shipping

 

 

This is $50 cheaper than I've ever seen the G-Shock Aviation GW3000 with analog hands and 50mm bezel. I saw the new version at Watch City. I think I prefer the older version. The newer version looked smaller even though the employee there told me the new version is easier to use and read. For me, both look easy to read. It's a matter of preference.
