I don't know if it's worth spending extra on another Dyson or getting a Hoover Windtunnel bagless. The latter sounds effective but I've read some reviews that after 2 years they die.
If that's the case, I'd rather get another Dyson.
Update:
I found a missing piece at the bottom of the Dyson, put it back, and now the wand works. So the Dyson lives on.

I prefer my Oreck, simple, effective, and very robust.. I have 2 kids but no dogs. It's just a vacuum, and made in USA. I did buy it used, you can pick them up for a good deal on Craigslist and spend a little money on service, if needed. I prefer bagged vacuums to canisters, cuts down on dust (I think).
I use my small Craftsman shop vac for handheld needs such as high window sills (bugs), high light fixtures (bugs), and keeping the intake ducts clean. Oreck sells a similar type of handheld too.

Have you tried a Miele, the suck from one of these with a full bag is superior to a friends Dyson empty, with the all the filters removed. It has so much suck that when I used a small "turbo brush" from another make the brush exploded.
Having three Greyhounds I can tell you that they are good on dog hair! Also better built than Mr Dyson's products.

I have a bagless Bissel Helix----was about seventy dollars at Target. Works better than the $500.00 Kenmore I have----which by the way, was top rated by Consumer Reports. Nothing beats the old Electrolux models from the 1960s and early 70s. They were the best----now, all that remains is the name. Some of them might be good, but they're not built like the old ones.
