I hear you on needing a break from one's offspring. I love the little fuckers in a way that is ridiculous, painful and scary, but parenting is really, really hard. Having small children in your 30s is hard enough (and I'm almost 40); I can't imagine how exhausting it must be in your 50s.

The other benefit of taking a break is how it impacts the marriage. My wife and I always "re-discover" each other when we go away on overnights, and it is a good reminder that the vast majority of our relatively mild marital issues has to do with the stresses of daily life, work and parenting. But it is good to be reminded how much we still love each other, although we're still working on how to bring the two together--our marriage and daily life with kids--so we don't lose sight of each other amidst the chaos. We're trying to do overnights more frequently, but it is hard.

By the way, happy birthday. I hope you buy yourself a nice new Seiko.

Thanks for the well wishes. I hope I haven't forgotten how to relax and have fun. Challenges.
