Hopefully you'll make a few bucks on that watch - what did it cost, $400+? You should be able to get $250-300, I would think.
Certainly enough to buy a new Seiko!

I'll take a hit, for sure, but it's just sitting there. When I want a black watch with white markings, I go for the Seiko SKZ267. I'll take the hit now rather than later.

So Invicta is not alone on the sell list. This one must have had a bigger ticket than most of your Invictas I assume. It's a nice piece. Do you have aspirations for any watches other than Seiko at this point----or do you think your next few purchases will be in that family?

I'm in a pure Seiko phase as far as I know. There are some Seiko Criteria and Kinetic Direct Drive models that I may get in the future if and only if I continue to sell off some of my older watches, mostly Invictas.

I'm in a 70% Seiko, 15% Citizen, 5% Invicta, 10% Other phase. Or something like that.

I forgot about Citizen, which I do like. Also I'm wearing my all gunmetal gray Invicta SAS Reserve at work and I'm rather enjoying it.

One of today's "Osgood File" episodes was about watches.

Citizen may be my second favorite watch brand right now, although overall is probably neck-and-neck with Invicta. I still like Invicta's diversity of styles better, but Citizen is much closer to Seiko both in terms of quality and class. I think you'd like the Skyhawks, Jeff, whether a Black Eagle like I have or one of the "Blue Angels." They're dorky in a fun way - with very busy dials, chrono and digital including. The only downside is that they aren't huge. My Black Eagle is probably around 44mm, but it seems a bit smaller because of the plastic strap. I would definitely get steel next time.

I definitely prefer the 48mm Black Eagle to the Blue Angel. But then again I like that Seiko SNAB69. Tough choice.
Posted by: herculodge | November 14, 2012 at 04:37 PM
The Black Eagle is 44mm - the same as the SNAB69.
One thing to keep in mind is that the SNAB69 is a bit thinner, while the Black Eagle is a bit chunkier. The Black Eagle is also only available used or on Ebay, but can be had for $150-200, whereas the SNAB69 is $250-300 ($285 on Amazon right now).
You might also want to check out the SNA411 - which is similar to my SNAD05. Very much in the "Breitling killer" vein.

For whatever reason, I prefer your SNAD05 to the SNA411. I hope my SNAB67, which arrives late December according to Amazon, plays big enough for my liking. We'll see.
Posted by: herculodge | November 14, 2012 at 05:13 PM
Yeah, me too - which is why I got the SNAD05.
Late December? That seems odd. I assume you don't have Amazon Prime? For me (with Prime) it says free delivery on Friday - for the $239 option. There is a $221 + $10 shipping, but it isn't Prime.

The watch is shipping from Singapore or Hong Kong, I believe. I hope I like it.

That's a month and a half from now - I predict that you order and receive at least one watch between now and then (takes one to know one).
Meanwhile I'm refreshing my DHL tracking every couple hours, rather pathetically anticipating the arrival of the SKA425. I've watched it go from Italy to Germany to France, from where it shipped some hours ago. Hopefully it arrives in Boston tomorrow and I get it on Friday, but I've also heard that DHL is rather poor. I'll be crossing my fingers until I get it.

Thought you might be interested in a nice little discovery I made while browsing watches in the Seiko sub-brand, "Wired". This is a more youthful/fashion focussed brand based on the unusual designs. Among them I found this gem.
http://watch-tanaka5.sub.jp/WIRED/AGAW403/
This is a rather handsome chronograph that comes at a decent size of 44mm and includes a very novel and unusual "mecha-quartz" movement. These movements used to be the exclusive domain of Swiss quartz watches that cost thousands of dollars, yet this watch and others like it (there's a nice model that is IP plated with a blue dial) cost around the $130 mark. What makes the movement special is that unlike most quartz chronographs, it use one stepper motor to drive the main watch functions and one motor to independently operate the chronograph mechanism, which includes a heart-shaped cam and hammer system allowing the chronograph hand to instantly reset, just like a fully mechanical watch. As well as looking rather neat, it also saves power that would ordinarily be used to step the needle all the way around back to zero.
It seems to me this is something of a forgotten technology so I don't think many people would be aware of it. Certain Pulsar/Seiko models sold in the West have this movement (VK63) but it's not advertised as being a feature which is very surprising considering how little you would have to spend to get it - around the $80 mark but they're not as good looking as those in the Wired range I reckon. Assuming you don't mind the shipping fees, I think it would make an interesting addition to a collection.
