I started looking at high-end table radios after the fiasco with the woeful Sangean WR-12 and I came across the Yamaha TSX 112BL, for about $300, the TSX 70BR, for about $200, and the MCR-140DBU, for about $280. There is also the TSX-140, for $400.
Amazon reviews give these collectively over 4.5 stars and they look impressive. The black TSX-112BL would look good on my ebony Yamaha piano.
But reviewers don't emphasize FM and AM recpetion. Does anyone have a sense of the reception on these radios?
I have a Yamaha CRX-040/FM/CD/USB/iPod which appears to be the same as the MCR-040. It is FM only (no AM). The 2 speakers come with it and are separate units. It seems well made / high quality. Its my primary radio when listening to local FM stations. It has great sound and overall I would recommend it highly; however, if its important to pull in weak stations its nothing special. Also, the presets are not direct presets but are the type where you keep pressing forward or backward to get to the next or prior preset.
The radio I have with the best ability to pull in weak stations is my Tecsun PL-660. Its an AM/FM/SW radio. Its a fraction of the price of the Yamaha so it can't be expected to be anywhere in the same league sound-wise but its also worse sound-wise than my old Sony portable which perhaps is more comparable.
You don't have an internet radio, right? In that case instead of worrying about reception you might want to order one of those. (I personally have a CC Wifi internet radio which I use heavily.)
