At that price it´s a steal...wonderful radio, great sound, great reception, nice display...strongly recommend it!

Thanks guys for the tip, I've been thinking about replacing my 20 year old RCA clock radio (it's an early didgital but still works fine) and this is one I've been considering.

One question if any of you have this radio: Is the clock display easily visible if you are lying in bed? I think the display can be raised by the hinge (like on my Sangean MP3 recorder which looks very similar to this) but I'm not sure if that is enought to make it easily visible when my head is on the pillow.

Thanks for any help.

Tim

I have the CL-100, and used it for a while as a bedside radio. The screen is at a permanently fixed angle, which is not quite raised enough for viewing at night. I put it on a radio stand, which made it perfect for night time viewing.

This really is an exceptional radio. The screen brightness is adjustable, and a moderate setting gives more than enough light to allow you to see when you're getting up in the dark. Plus, you can set how long the light stays on for. The audio quality is remarkably good for so small a radio - very rich and well-rounded, with the bass and treble adjustable. The NOAA band sounds superior to any other weather radio I've heard - not tinny, but pleasant.

Three qualifiers, not complaints: first, every time you change frequency, the volume of the radio drops to inaudible and then increases slowly to the set level. This is a strange feature that can inhibit DXing, but for normal use, it's not a problem. Second, the radio runs on 4 double A batteries, which only last a few weeks with normal use. So, you'd better use the included power adapter. And third, I hope you like menus, because this radio uses them for most of the fine adjusting. But they're well-designed and quite easy to use.

Again, I can't say enough in favor of this radio. Why am I no longer using it as a bedside radio? I had bought two - one for my wife and one for me. Oh well, the ladies like white appliances, so my wife prefers her white Sangean Sonido to the black CL-100. But when the Sonido finally goes on the blink, I'll sneak this one back in its place.

Tim, thanks for that info about the screen. It may be a deal breaker for me as a bedside radio, but for that price even if it turns out to be a problem, I'll be glad to have the radio somewhere in the house.

Tim

Ken -

Get an extremely low bedside table, and the radio will work out fine!

Pablo

Ken, just my practical solution regarding the display angle: I've put two rubber feet (self adhesives ones) on the bottom and that gave the radio the desired angle to see the display from the bed. Maybe can work for you too.

Gary

Wow, that's a great price.

Did Sangean ever fix the inability to set the volume on the voice alerts in the CL-100? I understand that the volume of the siren can be adjusted, but the volume of the voice alerts cannot be adjusted -- they just come on at full blast.

Paul

Sangean WR-5 is down to $68.23 on amazon - for those who bought it for more, if you email amazon and ask for a price adjustment, they will most likely do it.

Good idea, Paul, but after pursuing the matter I came across this:

Post-Order Price Match Policy
With the exception of TVs, we do not offer post-order price matching when an item's price drops after you buy it. Our prices regularly change, and the price you paid when your order shipped was the lowest price we were able to offer at the time. We consistently offer competitive prices on everything we carry because we know low prices are very important to our customers.

Paul

Jeff, that's true. But I've tried this a few times, and it has always worked. You simply ask for a one time courtesy price adjustment especially since your order probably hasn't been delivered yet. They will do it.

herculodge

I'll try it next time, Paul, but they already shipped the radio this morning.

Paul

ok ... it will work. I just did it a few days ago for an item my dad bought. Price went down within a day, and item was shipped and in transit/not delivered yet. Within 2 hours tech support from India did the price adjust.

herculodge

Paul, I just sent them an email asking for the current price, which is 65.26. I'm curious to see how they respond. Thanks.

Gary

The CL-100 is back up to $56 today.

Thanks to your blog, I was able to pick this up for this great price. And it has already become one of my favorite radios. I've so far really tested it on FM, and it easily is one of my top performers both in terms of being able to pick up stations, and how clear it is on those stations.

As mentioned above the sound is wonderful. And there is that annoying volume drop while tuning, so as mentioned, DXing is not really going to work all that well on this radio. But in terms of tuning a station and listening, this one is hard to beat.

The controls are a bit unique for a radio, but they're still quit intuitive and easy to master.

Love it.
