Jeff - Speaking of activities for which watches are used or not used, Casio makes a cool line of Pathfinder watches, presumably useful for adventurous types, but I'll bet a lot of them are bought by people who just like gadgets.

As a class, these are called ABC watches (for altimeter, barometer and compass), but they all seem to offer a thermometer as well.
Some of the Pathfinders have duplex LCDs that can display things like compass pointers or sunrise/sunset pointers on a second layer of the display.
Many offer sunrise/sunset time or moon phase/tide level, but none seem to offer both of these features (yet).
The PAW2000-1 is my current favorite. All it's lacking is the moon/tide info (street price about $220):

Plus the PAW2000 series is the thinnest of the bunch, at about 11 mm.

My second favorite is the PAG240-1 (about $150 street price):

It's 4 mm thicker than the PAW2000-1 and lacks the atomic time setting, but it gains a rotatable compass bezel.
Both are solar powered, and would be useful if you ever get stranded on an island in the middle of the ocean.

Small correction: the street price of the PAW2000-1 is about $240, not $220.

Gary, the Pathfinders caught my interest 2 years ago but I didn't go in that direction, opting for automatic diver watches with bright lume.

On a side note, if Invicta made that SAS in mid-size, I'd be all over it. But I just can't hang with the 52mm bezels anymore.

I'm still torn: Should I sell my jumbo watches? Part of me wants to. But I marvel at them in their velveteen cubicles breathing like embryonic queen bees in the hive. Bottom line: I only wear my Seikos. If a year passes and nothing changes, I'll have to sell the jumbo jets.

I'm taking the approach of keeping only a couple of my very favorite over-sized watches, although which ones (other than the 0507) I'm not sure. The contenders are the 6903, the 0519, the Venom II...I can see myself keeping two of them (including the 0507) at most.
Given my "re-calibration" of watch size through wearing Seikos, my 47mm SKA425 seems pleasantly large and my 48mm Capsule is as big as I really want to go. I could see getting a 49-50mm watch if it was really nice, but I'll never buy a 52mm again.

I noticed that my SKA427, which I'm currently wearing, is more comfortable than my Black Monster and my SKZ267. Not that those watches are uncomfortable per se, but it's all relative.

Jeff - What is it about the SKA427 that makes it more comfortable to wear than the others? It is strictly the band?
Posted by: Gary | December 15, 2012 at 05:28 PM
It's both the band and the case design. The latter is like my elegant Velatura evident form a side angle.
