After Geezer commented that a Panasonic RF-2200 would be his deserted island radio, the ONE radio to own, Ed wrote:
I'd probably want something with higher audio quality than the 2200, which isn't that hot... Maybe a Grundig Transistor 6001 or Satellit 800, or an Eton E1 with XM (a cherry picked sample).
I'd worry a little about the longevity of the Sat 800, and especially the E1. If it's my only radio on a desert island, I'd want a well built analog radio with no computer chips inside it.

I thought Geezer was asking what is the ONE radio you would use, if you were limited to just one, independent of reliability and imperviousness to environmental conditions on an hypothetical deserted island (not desert) surrounded by water...which if we'e going to be that literal would mean some solar-powered or hand-cranked waterproofed humidity-proof emergency type radio, which really drastically limits your choices.

Sorry, Ed. I meant to write "deserted," not "desert."

I thought Geezer meant a radio to use if you were stranded on a desert island.
Here is his original comment:
If I could only have ONE radio, it would be the RF-2000.
My "desert Island radio."

Can we assume a desert island is deserted?

Jeff - Yes, that's exactly what it means.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert_island
"A desert island or uninhabited island is an island that has yet to be (or is not currently) populated by humans."

It seems either way is OK, for Gilligan himself landed on a "desert isle" according to the theme song. So then, to be literal, on a desert island, an RF 2200 will last until the batteries die... unless you know how to build a generator from coconuts, like the Professor. So that means a true desert(Ed)-island radio will have to be one that employs solar cells or a mechanical generator. If you want to play it by the books, that's your only choice then.
BTW, thanks for the tip on the 9 dollar Sony ICF-S10MK2, cool little unit I didn't have!

Anyway, the Sangean 909. I haven't quite latched on to the newer 909X, so I do mean the older model.

Jeff: a "desert island" is a place where there's coffee and cake everywhere the eye can see! It's a place to go on wrist watch hiatus!
While enjoying my Tiramisu and espresso, I want the RF-2200 at my side.
If I could only have ONE radio, it would be the RF-2200.
My favorite all-around receiver.

Well, if I could choose to have Mary-Ann there with me, I wouldn't need a radio. We could make our own 'sweet music' together. ;-)

I know this has been around a while now, but....
I'm thinking something with a solar panel.

Drive In Freak: The old made in South Africa "Free Play" with crank and solar panel----AM-FM-SW is a good performer in that category. I have one of the South African models and find the quality to be slightly better than the newer made in China versions. It clunky and plasticky----won't win any beauty contests----but does well for what it's designed to do.
