I like both Seiko Divers, the SBDC001 Sumo and the SKA371. Both automatic. Both with strong lume. The case on the Sumo is slightly larger maybe 2mm or so. The Sumo is about $625. The SKA371 is about $225. While I like the Sumo a bit more, I'm not sure I like it $400 more.

I hear that. I've been looking at Sumos too - they sometimes come up used for $400-500 on Watchrecon.com.
Anyhow, the SKA371 seems like a natural purchase for you, considering how much you love the 427.

Jonny, while the 371 is very tempting, as is the Land Monster, I fear one more auto in the bunch may drive me over the abyss. My sanity means something to me.

As it should. I've actually gotten over the phobia of my automatics stopping. It really isn't much of a hassle to reset them and I figure it won't hurt them to go into hibernation.

Jonny, I'm slowly getting there. I'm already used to my SKZ267 stopping. My bigger concern is the kinetics. If the charge goes down, I worry that the rechargeable battery will die sooner.

Have you done some google searches on that?
I only have one kinetic--the SKA425--and it recharges quite easily. What are your kinetics? The SKA427, SUN007, and....anything else? It is slipping my mind.

I have the 2 you mention. I should google search any compromised battery problems from not wearing Seiko kinetics enough. Maybe it's nothing to worry about.

I really like this one. Considering my first Seiko, either this or a solar chrono SSC007. I don't need chrono or the slide rule. What do you guys suggest?

I prefer the look of the SKA371 or check out the SKA293.

J Maffuccio, if I was going solar then I'd go SSC015 - which I own and love - but it is really just a matter of taste. I agree with Jeff that I also like the SKA371 and SKA293 better than the SSC007. But again, it is up to you and your tastes - you really can't go wrong with Seiko.

Thanks guys. I'm moving on from a Casio Edifice but will still keep my G Shock for everyday bang around use. This is my 30th birthday present from my wife so I want to make certain I enjoy it for many decades to come! I like chronograph but don't really have a need for the extra features. I saw a version of the ssc015 at Costco but didn't care for the blue. Maybe I should just go for the black monster!

You can't go wrong with the Black Monster. Being a former chronograph-only collector, I hesitated for months and was not disappointed when I got it in the mail. Best of all, it grows on you - it is now my favorite "everyday watch" and one of my three or four favorites overall.
