Hey, Jeff,
I know you're more of an AM/MW band listener, but I'm very curious if you can hear the Voice of Korea on the west coast via shortwave. I hear them in North Carolina, but with a large external antenna and WinRadio Excalibur receiver. I have an audio clip in this post:
I could hear it last year in the High Desert (an area of inland Southern California ~70 miles from the coast) using a pocket reel antenna, but I haven't tried it recently; if I remember correctly they moved the schedule around so the only time you'd hear it in North America is in the wee morning hours.

I listen to shortwave on a random basis. When I have time, I tune to see what I can catch. North Korea is often available here on the central coast of California. They have been on for many years. The probability is high that one will find them on the air in the early evening from this listening point.
